Oh, and wrinkles, too. By Susan Allport, PreventionWhen Lisa Kepp (her name has been changed to protect privacy) was 2 years old, she was diagnosed with a neurological condition. She had not said a word in her short life—and it wasn’t for want of trying. Lisa was so frustrated at not being able to form the words she clearly wanted to say that she flew into temper tantrums four or five times a day. The family was on pins and needles waiting for the next time the little girl would explode.A pediatric neurologist diagnosed verbal apraxia, a speech disorder, and recommended that she receive intensive speech therapy. He suggested no other treatment. Lisa’s mother had heard, though, about studies linking omega-3 fatty acids to intelligence and healthy brains, and she thought she’d give them a try.

- What’s an ORAC score?
Posted on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 in On Call 24/7 w/Dr. White – Comments: (0)Dr. White has been known to talk about antioxidants and the need to protect our cells and how nature has given us powerful weapons in the cell protection armoury in the shape of the ones we make ourselves and the ones that we have to get from our diet. Additionally I mentioned that animals’ cells need protection too and the fact that we use a standard called the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) unit to measure the antioxidant potential of any given substance with antioxidant properties, and there are many, ranging from the three intracellular ones to vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and a host of others. Antioxidants, as we now know, ward off the attacks of the free radicals produced from energy production in our cells. If we do not have sufficient antioxidant protection our cells suffer damage to all of their components including the DNA. We minimize that damage with the right combination of self-produced and dietary sourced protection.
